Moraga, CA - In the second game of the season, the Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team was defeated 20-3 by Boston College on Sunday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. Lauren Costello scored six goals and Jenna McCabe and Shauna Culhane had four goals each to lead the Eagles.

Shauna Culhane got Boston College on the scoreboard early with the first of back-to-back goals coming 1:25 into the game. After Culhane scored again less than two minutes late, SMC Lisa Vogeley scored a free position goal at the 23:26 mark. Following the Vogeley goal, Boston College opened the floodgates by scoring 12 of the next 13 goals in the game.

After Vogeley's goal cut the BC lead to 2-1, Costello scored two straight goal, and then McCabe and Maura Mahoney added goals to give BS a 6-1 lead with 16:51 left in the first half. P.J. Hainley scored her third goal of the season at 16:12 and then BC scored eight straight to open a 14-2 lead with 3:11 left until halftime as Kate Horsman scored her only goal of the game. Abby Morgan netted her first goal of the season at the 1:15 mark, and BC held a 14-3 advantage after 30 minutes.

Culhane scored all four of her goals in the first half, and Costello netted four of her game-high six goals within the first 30 minutes of the game.

The Eagles defense held Saint Mary's to three shots in the second half, and BC goalkeepers Katie Monaghan, Sheila Serafino and Courtney Zwirko combined to shutout the Gaels in the final 30 minutes. Monaghan recorded the win for Boston College as she logged 35:46 in net, allowed three goals and made two saves.

Boston College converted 20 of its 38 shots while the Gaels were held to nine total shots in the game. Saint Mary's goalkeeper Hilary Gardner took the loss, as she played all 60 minutes and made eight saves.
 

 

Saint Mary's will return to action on Wednesday, March 5 when the Gaels host Fairfield University. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. from Saint Mary's Stadium.
